Mixology Monday: Superior Twists
My first MxMo blog post…I’m excited! This month the host is The Wild Drink Blog and the task was to create an original cocktail recipe, which bases on a cocktail classic, but adds a litte (or big) twist to it.
Two of my favorite cocktails are the Gin Basil Smash and the Basil Daiquiri. About 2 month ago, i searched the internet for a “Basil Margarita” like recipe, but didn’t find any. So i begun to fidle on the recipe myself. First i decided to base the new cocktail not on the original Margarita, but on the Tommy’s Margarita. This “Basil Tommy’s Margarita” tasted quite good, but it missed something.
I tried a few different things, but the answer was to take back the liquour portion of the original margarita into the mix and replace the Cointreau with St. Germain. The resulting drink is now basically a combination between the original Margarita and the Tommy’s Margarita, with the addition of basil. The recipe goes as follows:
Agave & Basil
- 50 ml Blanco Tequila
- 20 ml St. Germain
- 10 ml Agave Syrup
- 30 ml Fresh Lime Juice
- Handful of Basil (about 15 leaves, depending on size)
Muddle Basil with other ingredients – shake – double strain into a chilled cocktail glass
As you can see, i chose to name the cocktail Agave & Basil instead of “Basil Margarita”. I thought it was too far away from the original recipe to get to be named “Something Margarita”. I can’t stand most of the recipes which just use a famous name, add a prefix or sufix, but don’t have anything to do with the original at all.
Litte recomendation – you really should use a Blanco. You can use a Reposado, but this will push back the Basil, which results in a less balanced drink (if you don’t adjust the basil).
Happy mixing

Toll bitte weiter so !
Frohe Ostern
